Scope of the 2nd European Summer School "Proteomic Basics" 2008 Modern techniques of protein identification (i.e. mass spectrometry) are the key invention that has made proteomic research possible. Therefore, special emphasis will be put on this item in the second EU Summer School. As in the first event, tutorial lectures and workshops will cover the field of protein analysis and detection and will deal with the broad variety of protein identification methods; both topics will include the most recent developments in the field. Emphasis will be placed upon the basics of the two major mass-spectrometric techniques, i.e. Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation (MALDI) and Electrospray Ionisation (ESI) and their application to various type of analysis: (i) automated high-throughput analysis of proteins, (ii) identification of proteins that escape routine analysis, e.g. post-translationally modified proteins and membrane proteins, (iii) quantitative mass-spectrometric analysis of proteins (iv) mass-spectrometric analysis of covalent and non-covalent protein and protein-nucleic acid complexes, (v) high-end mass spectrometry, latest developments in instrumentation and their potential for (routine) proteome analysis. |
